Dental Crowns, Bridges, Inlays, Onlays and Veneers

Custom temporary restorations are often placed while your permanent restoration is being made. It is common to experience some sensitivity and mild soreness for a few days after your appointment. This should gradually improve as your tooth and surrounding tissues settle.

If your temporary feels loose, comes out or breaks, do not throw it away. Keep it safe and call our office so we can schedule a visit to replace or recement it. Good oral hygiene remains important during this time. Brush carefully and keep the area clean. You may floss your teeth, but avoid flossing around temporary restorations unless our office gives you specific instructions to do so.

New Dentures and Adjustments

It is common to experience mild discomfort, sore spots and speech changes when you first receive new dentures. Your mouth needs time to adjust, and several adjustment appointments may be needed before your dentures feel fully comfortable.

Do not sleep with your dentures unless our office instructs you otherwise. Remove them each night and store them in a denture container with denture cleaner or water as directed. Before wearing your dentures again, rinse and brush them thoroughly with water. Keeping your dentures clean and giving your gums time to rest each night can help improve comfort and oral health.

Tooth Extractions

After an extraction, place the gauze provided over the site and bite down with firm pressure for at least 30 minutes without removing it. If bleeding continues, replace it with fresh gauze and apply pressure for another 30 minutes. Repeat as needed until the bleeding slows and stops.

Use a cold compress on the outside of your face near the extraction site for 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off during the day of surgery. Avoid hot foods and hot beverages. Do not rinse your mouth, spit, use a straw or drink carbonated beverages right after surgery, as these actions can disrupt healing. Do not brush your teeth on the day of your extraction. You may resume normal oral hygiene the following day unless told otherwise.

Some discomfort, swelling and bruising are normal after an extraction. Take prescribed medications exactly as directed. For the first couple of days, stick to soft foods such as yogurt, soups and shakes. Be careful not to bite your lips or cheeks while you are numb. Children should be closely watched and reminded not to chew on numb tissues.

Dental Fillings

After receiving a dental filling, it is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days. This should gradually improve as the tooth settles. If sensitivity persists beyond a week or you notice discomfort when biting, please contact our office.

Avoid chewing on the treated side until any numbness has fully worn off to prevent accidentally biting your cheek, lip or tongue. You may resume your normal brushing and flossing routine right away. If you received a silver (amalgam) filling, avoid chewing hard foods on that side for 24 hours to allow the filling to fully set.

Gum Surgery

Some pain, swelling and minor bleeding are normal after gum surgery. To help reduce these symptoms, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face near the surgical area for 10 minutes at a time, followed by 5 minutes off, during the day of your procedure.

Take all prescribed medications exactly as instructed, and make sure your follow-up appointment is scheduled. Do not touch the surgical area with your fingers, as this can interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection. Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your mouth as usual, but avoid the area near the sutures unless our office advises otherwise. A temporary change or loss of sensation near the surgical site can occur and is often normal. Do not spit, smoke or use a straw on the day of surgery or for several days afterward.

Implant Surgery

After implant placement, mild bleeding, swelling and discomfort are normal. A cold compress placed on the outside of your face near the surgical site for 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off can help minimize these symptoms on the day of surgery.

Take your medications exactly as prescribed and keep your follow-up appointment so we can monitor your healing. Do not touch the implant area with your fingers. Brush and floss the rest of your teeth normally, but avoid the sutured area until it has had time to heal. Do not spit, smoke or use a straw on the day of your procedure or for the next several days, as these activities can interfere with proper healing.

Root Canal Treatment

After root canal treatment, it is normal to have some tenderness or sensitivity for the first few days. This should improve gradually. Take your prescribed medication as directed to manage discomfort and support recovery.

A temporary filling is often placed after treatment, so do not bite down on hard foods for at least one hour after your appointment. Until the tooth receives its permanent restoration, chew carefully on the opposite side of your mouth whenever possible. Avoid touching the treated area with your fingers, and continue brushing and flossing gently to keep your mouth clean while the area heals.
